MVS Quarterly Report

February - April 2008 in Screenshots and Photos

David Glick

Jan 25 - Starting off with one screen. Most of these windows are code for Plone, the content management system we use, so that I can figure out how things are working behind the scenes. Other windows are for communication of various sorts (e.g. e-mail, Skype with colleagues at ONE/Northwest, and IRC chat with Plone developers worldwide).

Jan 28 - Up to two screens.

Feb 7 - Here I am working on the Sightline Daily News site, a daily Northwest environmental news syndicate run by Sightline Institute. This was a multi-month project which finally launched in early March. My task was taking the design mockups delivered as Photoshop images and making the functional website look the same.

Feb 10 - One of the highlights of the past few months -- and probably the year too -- was traveling to Mountain View, CA (home to Google) for the 2008 Plone Strategic Planning Summit. I got to meet 50 other Plone developers, users, and consultants; many of them big names that I recognized from blogs, mailing lists, and chat. Together, we charted a course for what the Plone community will do next, both in terms of marketing and software development. My newcomer's perspective as a recent Plone learner was particularly valued.

Feb 15 - Here the old High Country News site makes an appearance. We are working on an updated website for this Colorado-based environmental news magazine, another multi-month project which remains in progress.

Feb 18 - A few of us took advantage of the holiday to explore Discovery Park.

Feb 21 - Here the Cascade Land Conservancy website makes an appearance, at lower right. This was an existing site to which we made some minor visual updates.

Feb 26 - Lots of text windows open today...I must have been tracking down a particularly hard to find bug.

Mar 4 - Up to three screens. And now I can video chat.

Mar 6 - The Green For All website makes an appearance here. Green For All is a national organization promoting the creation of "green-collar jobs," that is, new jobs which are good for the environment.

Mar 24 - The Green For All site again, almost ready for launch.

Apr 1 - The Green For All site ended up launching on the same day that its founder, Van Jones, appeared on The Colbert Report. I spent the entire previous day making sure that our server was prepared to handle the extra traffic generated in the wake of this appearance. Here is a graph from our monitoring software showing the periodic peaks in web traffic as The Colbert Report aired in each timezone (including reruns the following day).

Apr 18 - Jon Stahl and I work on some code during Open Source Friday, a weekly gathering with other Seattle Plone developers to share knowledge and work on projects that benefit us all.

Apr 19 - Workday at the VS house! 10-15 people showed up from Seattle Mennonite Church and Evergreen Mennonite Church, and we got a lot of much-needed maintenance and yardwork done, including power-washing the deck.
